Transformation by Contemplation

July 18, 2018

This week, we look at how we can be transformed. We are taught in Sunday School that God helps us in our troubles, but why do we need to suffer? Join us this Sunday. Please pray this prayer with me this week:

Dear Lord, I am trying to do better and better each day; I am trying to walk with you and do your will, but sometimes it seems like I am slipping backwards no matter how hard I try. And I get confused sometimes; even if I want to do the right thing, I don’t always know what it is.

So this is my prayer, heavenly Lord, for your help in straightening out my mind and straightening out my life. Lead me, Lord, and let your Holy Spirit guide me. Even if the correction is painful, help me to keep my mind open to your truth. Let me do your will in my every action, and know your will, that I might do it. Help me not be deceived by false assertions or glib intelligence, by those who would excuse or promote sinful actions, by those who simply do not know; and above all, help me not to deceive myself. Guide me away from excuses and rationalizations when I have sinned, but into your holy truth, that I might know my sin, and correct what I can, and ask forgiveness for what I cannot. By the grace and mercy of holy Christ, I ask this,

Last summer, a group from Brunswick Church attended the Global Leadership Summit and walked away with fresh knowledge, insight, and ideas as to how we can better serve our Lord, our community and ourselves. This annual summit is being held Thursday, August 9 & Friday, August 10 at Grace Fellowship in Halfmoon. The cost is currently $209 per person and there are discounts available for students, teachers, and veterans. Please contact Office Manager Colleen Lais if you are interested in going.

Pastoral Nominating Team

We have heard that this team has been hard at work discerning our path toward extending a call to an associate pastor in the future. We were blessed with Pastor Elizabeth, so their work is cut out for them, but this team is up for the challenge. We will receive updates as their work progresses, and there is info to share. In the meantime, keep these team members in your prayers, for wisdom and vision.

If you entered Brunswick Church last week, you may have noticed more bustle, noise and excitement then usual. It was the week of our annual Vacation Bible School. We had more than 75 volunteers coming to greet about 130 children. The morning was filled with stories, games, songs and snacks that helped us share that “Jesus Rescues.” Children ages 3-5th grade were served well. We even were able to greet Teens without a church home and give them a place to serve as they learned alongside the little ones what it means for Jesus to Rescue. We even saw some new faces in worship this past Sunday as a result of our VBS ministry.

Each year at VBS we have a Missions station. There children learn about kids in another part of the country. This year we learned about Haiti. We learned about how, after years of natural disaster and difficulty, there are children without good nutrition. We partnered with World Vision and Group Publishing (our VBS curriculum supplier) to send seeds to Haiti. Every $10 the children brought it could provide seeds for a family for a year, and education on how to sustainably farm them. We also learned how some kids in Haiti have to help work, even as small children, in order to help provide for the family. So we asked the children at VBS to do chores to earn the money so we can understand what it is like for the kids in Haiti to have to work. Well the children blew our expectations away. They raised over$1300 and Sunday we received additional gifts that doubled the children’s efforts. This means that over $2600 came in for the kids in Haiti. Our VBS children are therefore helping 260 families receive skills to provide healthy food for their families and extra income for their homes! If you join us for worship the next couple weeks, there will be a display in front of the Communion table that gives a visual representation at the number of families being helped. During VBS we had a white “seed packet” to represent 1 family we are helping. There are 260 seed packets on display!

It was a wonderful VBS this year. And we are grateful for all God did. Please continue to pray for the children and teens who joined us. And we hope to see you next year for VBS 2019 (July 8-12, 2019)

2018 Deacon’s Backpack Project

Last year the deacons distributed over 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to area children in need. We are once again distributing backpacks for the upcoming school year.  We are in need of donated supplies.  Please visit the table in the commons and take a tag and purchase the supplies listed. Return them to the table by August 5th.  Monetary donations are also welcome and appreciated.  Please specify “backpack project” on your check.  Distribution will take place on Saturday, August 18th, from 9:30-11 in the church commons. Thank you for your generous support of this ministry.

This Sunday in worship we welcome missions partners Peter and Laurel Olson and their family, serving missionary kids at the Black Forest Academy in Germany. Please look out for them and touch base for more information on how we can be praying for and otherwise supporting their ministry. If you won’t be in worship on Sunday but would like more info, the Olsons can be reached at

What should we call the BEB? We need a new name for our regular weekly communication tool. Please email Henry for any suggestions for a new name.

Important information for those who choose to give online. The system only allows donations to be set up for a specific period of time. Please be aware that once that time ends the donations will stop without notification. Some of our members have found that their tithing ended without their knowing. It is important to always review your scheduled donations and update the information with any changes in bank or credit card information.
